26 Feb 2006 Heat too low for grilling mudcrabs
A warm calm evening in the Hutt valley greeted visiting rivals Maranui from Wellington City to the Hutt water polo club's second home game at Huia last night.

The first quarter was littered with 9 ejections, 3 against Hutt and 6 against Maranui as both teams were clearly unsettled in their first game together of the new year. Despite the opportunities the heat were unable to convert any into goals, with the young mudcrab goalie, Alex Ross, proving very effective in front of his goal. Maranui led the scoring after the first minute when Tim Grace slotted his first of 5 goals for the evening. It was a further 3 minutes before Maranui had a second opportunity at Hutts net after an ejection on Connor Lui with  Jono Ross delivering his first and only goal. The remainder of the first quarter was fairly evenly matched, however Ryan Wilkinson managed to power home a wide angle shot with just 2 seconds left on the clock leaving the Mudcrabs with a comfortable 3 goal advantage early in the game.

The second quarter proved a little more settled with 5 ejections fairly evenly split and Maranui were able to convert 2 of theirs into goals. The Heat eventually entered the scoring six minutes into the second quarter with a beautifully placed shot from newcomer Kiran Davis a former Marist player now living in the Valley. A minute later Eamon Lui followed with the first of his 3 goals, however despite the rally from Hutt, Maranui increased their lead to 4 goals at half time with successful shoots from Tim Grace, Stefan Currie and Richard Chambers.

The Heat entered the second half with determination to narrow the advantage and played a fairly well matched quarter scoring 3 goals, however the accuracy of Maranuis' shooting was keeping Hutt at bay with both Tim Grace and Richard Chambers dominating the quarter and adding a further 4 goals to their teams' tally. The gap widened to 5 goals by the time the quarter hooter sounded leaving the Heat digging deep into their reserves to rally in the final quarter. Richard Chambers opened the scoring only 30 seconds into the quarter and together with help from Tim Grace, Hunter de Groot and Ryan Wilkinson the Mudcrabs loaded 6 goals into the score sheet. The Heat replied with 3 goals and several close shoots but overall were unable to match the experience and skill of the Mudcrabs leading scorers.
It was an entertaining game that was actually more evenly matched than the final score belied followed by a very enjoyable social function attended by all.

Maranui Mudcrabs 16: Ryan Wilkinson 2, Stefan Curry 1, Jono Ross 1, Hunter de Groot 1, Richard Chambers 6, Tim Grace 5,

Hutt Heat 8: Paora Morrison 1, Kiran Davis 1, Conor Lui 1, Eamon Lui 3, Jonathan Southee 1, Ben Pye 1.

Referees: Boris Kipnis, Brendon Ward
