2017 FINA World Championships
New Zealand has won its first match in game two at the FINA World Championships, pipping South Africa 8-6.

The Kiwis will be happy with the win, and will take the good moments of that game with them further into the tournament.

“It was a really stressful game. We had lots of opportunities in the first quarter to go ahead” said coach Angie Winstanley-Smith.
It proved to be a nail biter with New Zealand holding the lead four times and South Africa thrice. The Kiwis came from behind to blast home with four unanswered goals for victory.

Hutt’s Brydie Pye and Kirsten Hudson gave New Zealand a cracker start with a pair of bounce shots within the first three minutes. Big-shooting Kelly Mason bounced one in from the top to level at 3-3 by 4:56. Here the scoring stopped until halftime.

Hudson snared her third with a slider, an amazing 11 minutes after the previous goal, so tight was the defence at both ends. Lapses in defense and missed opportunities saw South Africa score two goals and put the Kiwis on the back-foot with just minutes left to play.

An enthusiastic crowd had plenty to cheer about soon after when Brydie Pye with a bouncer and Mason on extra from the top had the Kiwis back on even terms at 3:36.

South Africa called a timeout only for New Zealand to steal the ball and head up the pool and allow Mason to blast from Buda Castle at 1:25. New Zealand gained the ball and earned an ejection, calmly called timeout and worked the ball around, past the ejection time to Hudson who bounced it in from very deep right at 0:28 for what was a magnificent 8-6 success.

Veteran Kirsten Hudson, who scored three of New Zealand’s eight goals against South Africa, says the Kiwis will need to control the basics in order to be competitive against the States.
“The biggest word in our team at the moment is discipline” she said.

“We want to stop their counter-attacks, they’re very fast and very strong. We need to play to our game plan and eliminate our basic mistakes.”
